Clunky Commando

Every time the tank comes off , you lubricate the Heim Joints . Every time . They should look greasy , not shiny . I use transmission oil 80/90 Weight , but any oil is better than neglect .

Neglect is my middle name. And I can't remember the last time the tank was off. It is now. :p

I use Imgur for hosting
Imgur did not like the rules imposed on them by either the UK Govt or one of the many Govt Quango's for some reason I cannot remember (age verification ?) , their solution was just to block UK access. Hence why a VPN works.

So its the notch in the fixing bracket above the rose joint bolt head that seems ro indicate contact, cause of clunking? Might want to check the tank tunnel closest to the joint position...my repro tank needed dimpling in the area when I fitted my DT headsteady.

Rose joint come in different spec, some just steel on steel, others brass or even nylon at the joint surfaces. Some have grease ports. I believe Jim Comstock makes up a headsteady with much larger joints to better cope with wear.

No, a loose rose joint.

FWIW Dept....after replacing the rose joints twice and spending far too much time setting the Taylor head steady up I ditched it and went back to OEM setup wuth suspension spring. Since I put the Taylor unit on when I first got the bike I cant really say if its better than stock, but the stock is definately no worse than it.

A Heim joint head steady is vastly superior to the stock rubber set up . It allows vertical movements only , no horizontal . This is the goal . Lubricate the joints often
Enjoy .

Seems SD has lost his VIP status so is posting pics on external services...some of which are blocked in the antipodes...
Never had VIP status.
Over 11,500 posts and over 15 years utilizing the wealth of information on the forum. Now providing/acknowledging a way to circumvent the perk of pic posting through a VIP membership.
Methinks JD assigned photo posting to the VIP contribution/membership for a specific purpose.
Costs for VIP equates to about $5.00 US per month.
Some participants, me for instance, believe it important to help support the forum out financially.
If you sit at the bar you should buy a beer, and tip the bartender.

Well, somehow the worn Heim joint was not actually causing the issue with the clunking. So the mystery deepens. I don't suspect loose isolatics as it seems to behave fine there. Butter smooth at 3500. There's a little slop in the center stand from wear despite all new hardware. And I think I braced the centerstand with my foot previously with no change.

Back on the bench for more forensics.

Using the Insert Image URL is a BY DESIGN feature on most all forums. Just click the photo icon. Not deceptive, not a bypass.

You can tech talk it all you care to but dodging the point doesn't justify the act.
Using a method to backdoor your way in to posting photographs, without paying for the feature, allows you to sit back and let others pay up, including the ones who keep it up and running.

It's five bucks a month, you can own a Norton, but you can't/won't offer a dime to support this forum.
Got it.

I was a VIP member for many years until three years ago when I pretty much quit this forum - until a couple of months ago when I popped back in.

I spend more time on a different forum which has only two rules:

1) Have Fun!
2) Don't be an asshole

People there support it when they can/want and don't act out against others when they can't/don't.
